This month, we’re shining the spotlight on ASA Wingman Captain & Board President Kevin McNulty!
Tell us a little more about yourself. What would you like readers to know?
I am a physical education graduate and taught and coached after graduation. I am now a commercial real estate developer and manager. I stayed involved in coaching and competing in lacrosse for a while, and then took up running.
What drew you to ASA? When did you start?
I knew Dave as a good friend of my family and heard that he was starting a nonprofit, but I really didn’t know much more. About 13 years ago I was running in a local race and I saw him and James racing along side (but actually in front of) me, and I found him at the finish line.
I asked him how I could help. He smiled…and here we are.
What do you love most about ASA?
This is the hardest question. I literally love everything about ASA. I guess the thing that makes me the happiest is the beautiful family-like community that we have become.
Many of our Athletes’ families have felt, at some time or another, alone or excluded. I love that we (ASA) have given them a fun and safe place to be part of a caring and accepting group where their children are able to train and compete with everyone else on the race course, and enjoy spending time together with new friends. Together we always finish… and laugh!
Tell us more about the people you have met through ASA.
I’ve been with ASA so long and have met so many great people that I can’t possibly pick one Athlete or Wingman. I’d love to tell you more about my buddy Ray, but then this would become a novel.
What is your favorite part of a group run?
Everything. Meeting new Athletes and Wingmen who start nervous and shy, but then in 60 minutes become enthusiastic members of the team. Bonds that form between Athletes and Captains so that when race day comes they are already a team ready to race. Parents and guardians walking together talking and sharing stories.
What is your favorite part of race day?
Believe it or not it’s the starting line (not the finish line) because we are all together.
What is your best ASA story to date?
The trip to Massachusetts to meet and run with Dick and Rick Hoyt. It’s a long story, but I’ll never forget it.
RIP Dick, you’ve left one heck of a legacy and we are proud to be a part of it!
