ASA SPOTLIGHT

Join us each month as we interview and feature members of the ASA Community! This month, we're shining the spotlight on ASA Athlete, Ian Gallagher, and his mom, ASA Captain and 2024 Brand Ambassador, Amy!

Tell us a little more about yourself. What would you like readers to know?

Amy – Amy lives in Howard County with her family: her husband Ryan and two children. She is a preschool teacher and loves fostering the development of children. Staying active has always been important in her life, as she was a multi-sport athlete growing up. She loves pushing herself physically, often coming up with a new fitness goal each year. Other activities she enjoys include hanging out with friends, camping, playing games with her family, and reading.

Ian – Ian was born premature and has been disabled since birth. He is non-verbal and has very low cognitive functioning. Ian has a seizure disorder which impacts his ability to walk and communicate. He loves being outside, feeling the wind and enjoying nature!

What drew you to ASA? When did you start?

Amy– Having always been an active person, and having a child with disabilities, she was thrilled to have been introduced to ASA. She and Ian joined in 2014, with their first race being the Baltimore 10-Miler. They quickly realized this organization was going to have a huge impact on their lives; everyone was incredibly welcoming and embraced them without hesitation.

What do you love most about ASA?

Amy – Hands down the inclusivity is the most important aspect of ASA. Amy knows that when they’re around their ASA Family, Ian will be included.

Ian – Ian loves the thrill of racing in the jogger, and hearing his name being cheered along the course.

Tell us more about the people you have met through ASA.

Amy & Ian – In their 10 years with ASA, they’ve met some of their best friends. They have a close-knit group of friends that they do everything with: from racing, to travelling, to celebrating the highs and lows of life. They are selfless people who love Amy and Ian and their family, who have been there for them through many ups and downs. And every year Amy and Ian get to meet new friends who enrich their lives and become part of their social circle.

What is your favorite part of race day?

Amy – She looks forward to the camaraderie of being part of a team with a common goal: enjoying the experience and finishing together. Seeing friends, new and old, just enhances her experience.

Ian – He loves getting hugs and being greeted when arriving at a race.

What is your best ASA story to date?

Amy & Ian – There are so many it is hard to choose just one, but their first marathon together is high up there! The elated smile on Ian’s face at the finish line when they placed a medal around his neck was priceless. Other great moments include hearing Ian shrieking and bouncing while running, Ian’s name being called out on the course, and Ian’s contagious smile when they finish. All these moments round out why they love racing with ASA each year.
